Real Madrid ran rampant and wild en route to a 4-0 victory over relegation threatened Getafe in a game which they had to win to keep their slim title hopes alive.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave the hosts a lead that they never relinquished in the 24th minute as Madrid ensured Barcelona would have to earn a point on Wednesday evening to secure the Liga title.

The Portuguese attacker scored his 35th and 36th goals of the season either side of Karim Benzema’s strike to ensure a comfortable evening for the hosts at the Bernabeu.

It was Ronaldo’s 49th goal in all competitions, making him the most successful Real Madrid player in history in terms of goals scored in a single season, beating the record previously held by Ferenc Puskas.

Madrid began the brighter of the two sides but were left frustrated with Angel di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain both wasting decent opportunities.

Getafe found themselves a goal down when Cristiano Ronaldo rose highest to meet Mesut Ozil’s inviting cross to send a decisive header beyond a helpless Oscar Ustari.

Jose Mourinho’s side came close to doubling their lead in similar fashion, but Ronaldo put his effort over the bar.

Despite Madrid’s dominance, Getafe came close to an equaliser before half-time when Adrian Colunga was denied by a vital block, after his bullet header was on course to give the Azulones a life-line.

Los Blancos’ second goal came soon after the interval when Getafe failed to clear the ball to safety allowing Ozil to roll a pass to Ronaldo who steadied himself before lashing home.

Three and easy | Ronaldo netted his seventh hat-trick of the season as Madrid thrashed Getafe

Ozil continued to dictate the tempo of the game, and Higuain was within a whisker of controlling the German's through ball after the former Werder Bremen man had spun his marker brilliantly.

Getafe lacked the required quality when they did venture into the final third and it was all too easy for Ricardo Carvalho and company to clear their lines.

Madrid finished the game in emphatic fashion when Xabi Alonso produced a ball of awe-inspiring quality. It found Benzema, who controlled brilliantly with his first touch of the game and then put the ball out of Ustari’s reach with a deft lob.

Madrid continued to search for their fourth goal of the evening, and the opportunity fell to Ronaldo when he was fouled in the penalty area. ‘CR7’ picked himself up to cheekily chip the ball into the net for his second hat-trick in four days.

The win for Mourinho’s men ensures that Barcelona will have to secure a point on Wednesday evening to guarantee a third consecutive La Liga trophy.

Getafe face trouble at the foot of the table as they face an in form Osasuna side in the fight for survival at the weekend. Michel’s men are just one point clear of the drop zone with two fixtures remaining.
